K Series Specifications
The slip is essential to the functioning of the coupling: there could not be torque transmission without slip! The formula for slip, from which the power loss can be deduced is as follows:
slip %=((input speed – out speed) / input speed) x 100
In normal conditions (standard duty) the slip can vary from 1,5% (large power) to 6% (small power).
The TRANSFLUID couplings follow the laws of all centrifugal machines:
- Transmitted torque is proportional to the square of input speed;
- Transmitted power is proportional to the cube of input speed;
- Transmitted power is proportional to the fifth power of circuit outside diameter.
The K Series couplings work using oil but they are also available for water operation upon request.
They are also available certified according to directive 94/9/EC (Atex) covering all categories.
K Series Overview
The TRANSFLUID coupling (K series) is a constant filling type comprising of three main elements:
- Driving impeller (pump) mounted on the input shaft.
- Driven impeller (turbine) mounted on the output shaft.
- Cover, flanged to the output impeller, with an oil-tight seal.
The first two elements can work both as pump and/or turbine.
OPERATING CONDITIONS
The TRANSFLUID coupling is a hydrokinetic transmission.
The impellers perform like a centrifugal pump and a hydraulic turbine. With an input drive to the pump (e.g. electric motor or Diesel engine) kinetic energy is imparted to the oil in the coupling. The oil moves by centrifugal force across the blades of the turbine towards the outside of the coupling.
This absorbs the kynetic energy and develops a torque which is always equal to input torque thus causing rotation of the output shaft. The wear is practically zero since there are no mechanical connections. The efficiency is influenced only by the speed difference (slip) between pump and turbine.
KFBD Overview
The KFBD serie Fluid Couplings are used on all types of industrial equipment driven by internal combustion engines up to 500 kW. By transmitting power through a fluid, they improve overall performance and protect both driving and driven machine.
When you drive through KFBD coupling you profit by these Basic Benefits.
1 – Frees engine during heavy starts.
During heavy starts and sudden running load increases, engine lugging is prevented. The Fluid Coupling simply “slip” while it smoothly picks up the load.
2 – Provides smoothly drive
Mechanical connection is eliminated; power and torque are transmitted entirely through mass and velocity of fluid. The result is a smooth, sustained flow of power minus the shocks and strains which, with mechanical drives, cut equipment life.
3 – Prevents transmission of shock loads
Fluid Couplings protects both driving and driven equipment by smoothing out shock loads and preventing them from striking solid resistance.
4 – Assures damping effects
Torsional vibrations from engine are drastically dampened by Fluid Coupling making longer life of entire transmission life.
5 – Transmits full input torque
The patented Transfluid Circuit design delivers output torque always equal to input torque. The engine can turn at its max torque-rpm, even when driven is at stall.
6 – High radial load capability
The KFBD serie has been also desigend for application requiring pulley installation particularly on heavy duty service.
KX Series Specifications
- Starting stall torque below 50% of the electric motor nominal torque.
- Starting torque limitation also below nominal torque.
- KX allows the fluid coupling removal without moving the electric motor or the driven machine avoiding the realignment.
- KX has a fusible plug that in case of intevention, releases the fluid from the working circuit to a tank preventing leakages into the ambient.
- A steel body design suitable for underground mines is available.
- The fluid filling operation is quite easy and apart from some particular cases, it is not required to change the fluid during the test starting: the starting time can be optimized by changing on the externally adjustable valves.
- KX fluid coupling is very suitable for driving machines having large powers and inertia: typical applications are mills and belt conveyors
They are also available certified according to directive 94/9/EC (Atex) covering all categories.
KX Series Overview
The KX is a fluid coupling with a special patented circuit designed to start up large inertia machines driven by eletric motors. The circuit includes two internal tanks connected by a scoop. The scoop works like a differential pump transferring the fluid from one chamber to the other and finally into the coupling working circuit through external adjustable valves. This double passage allows a long starting time with very low starting torque and absorbed current by the electric motor, virtually isolating the effect of the inertia of driven machine.
The coupling can work using both oil and treated water as standard.
OPERATING CONDITIONS
The fluid quantity in the working circuit is less than in traditional constant fill fluid couplings, as the fluid level is much lower than the rotating axie. The reduced fluid quantity in the working circuit allows low starting torque. During input rotation the scoop transfers the fluid from tank A to tank B and then, through an adjustable valve for starting time regulation, to the working circuit.
SKF Overview
The SKF serie Fluid Couplings are used on all types of industrial equipment driven by internal combustion engines up to 180 kW requiring a tight flywheel mounting. By transmitting power through a fluid, they improve overall performance and protect both driving and driven machine.

The SKF serie includes the SKFE line which allows the installation of a pulley on output shaft.
