Palmer Johnson Supplies Transfluid Hybrid System for Alaska's First Hybrid Fishing Vessel
Palmer Johnson Power Systems supplied and supported the Transfluid components behind the repower of the F/V Mirage — Alaska's first hybrid diesel-electric combo fishing vessel, now operating out of Sitka.
The project was completed in partnership with ALPHA and Sitka Custom Marine, whose background spans years of hands-on work in the commercial fishing industry. Sitka Custom Marine's depth of experience in shipbuilding, rigging, and maintenance shaped the fabrication and rebuild work required to bring the Mirage's new hybrid system to life.
The repower centers on a fully integrated hybrid system powered by Transfluid and Bellmarine — pairing Transfluid's hybrid marine transmission with Bellmarine's electric propulsion technology to give the Mirage both diesel and electric operating modes. For a commercial fishing vessel, that combination means quieter running during sensitive operations, lower fuel consumption over a season, and reduced emissions, without giving up the power reserves a working boat depends on.
As the authorized North American distributor and service provider for Transfluid — covering Alaska along with 19 other western and central states — Palmer Johnson supplied the hybrid transmission components and provided technical support throughout the build. It's a project that reflects what's possible when proven drivetrain technology meets real-world marine fabrication expertise: a fishing fleet built for cleaner, more efficient operation.
